Aloe based edible coating: A new ally for Food Safety

ALOECOAT - Aloe based edible coating: A new ally for Food Safety

From mid September 2015, the focus of the U.S. fruit and vegetable industry has been set in the case of Mexican cucumbers distributed by the San Diego distributor Andrew & Williamson, which have been contaminated with salmonella and caused the death of several people and a discredit to Food Safety practices in the fresh produce industry. Such discredit reached many mexican fruit and vegetable packers too, and many doubts arose around the Food and Safety situation of mexican Fresh Produce exported to U.S. market.

Our company Aloe Eco Park manufactures a novel aloe based edible coating branded as ALOECOAT 1-BIO, with some variations such as ALOECOAT 1-BIO X and ALOECOAT 1-BIO PLUS. These products are a new ally for Food and Safety at the fresh produce industry.

Our technological solution offer several advantages when compared to other post harvest treatment products used in the fresh produce industry.

We have always presented our technological solution ALOECOAT 1-BIO as a product to extend shelf life in fruits and vegetables, as demonstrated in many researchs worldwide. But additionally, ALOECOAT offers other attributes, mainly as an antibacterial and antifungical solution.

We must strengthen now on such attributes, since they are part of a Food Safety program developed by any member of the supply chain, be either the grower, the packer, the distributor or the retailer of any fruit or vegetable.

Our solution ALOECOAT 1-BIO is a new ally for Food Safety in the Fresh Produce industry, since it offers anti fungal and antibacterial functions, which are provided by three components of aloe, namely the acemannan, the cinnamic acid and the chrysophanic acid.

Acemannan ia a polysaccharide present in the aloe, which has bactericidal and germicidal actions as well as an antifungal action. Cinnamic acid is a compound within the aloe sap which produce a germicidal action against fungi, while chrysophanic acid is a good fungicide.

After a state-of-the-art industrial process, we refine the aloe extract obtained in our first manufacturing process, and then we mix the adequate aloe compounds to obtain a unique food grade edible coating to assist fruit and vegetable growers and packers to reach the best results in their Food Safety programs.

All our ALOECOAT range of products offer these attributes, since acemannan, cinnamic acid and crisophanic acid are present in all of our formulations. ALOECOAT 1-BIO, ALOECOAT 1-BIO X and ALOECOAT 1-BIO PLUS are offered in 20 liter plastic drum, 200 liter (55 gallon) drum and 1000 liter plastic tote.
