ALOECOAT 1-BIO is an edible coating for fresh produce that extends shelf life and gives antibacterial and antifungical protection. ALOECOAT 1-BIO was specially developed to attend main concerns in the fresh produce industry as it has tremendous implications that goes beyond the loss of a percentage of the produce. But behind the product development cycle, there is a rationale on the product.
 
This is our rationale for ALOECOAT 1-BIO.
 
Fresh produce production has several critical points of manipulation that may cause mechanical damages along with other damages caused by insect injury or undetected fungi before packing. The normal plant handling, picking, transportation, selection, packing and transportation until it reaches the fridge of the final consumer creates such a pressure over the integrity of the produce that is common and virtually imposible to prevent from having fruits without a level of damage to go inside the cases. 
 
Furthermore, the ethylene gas liberated by the fruit or vegetable as its natural process of decay, will boost the damaged ones to expose quicker their damages liking fluids does becoming a growth medium for bacterial and fungi where they prosper well (pathogens are always in the air landing in our food looking for a growth medium). So then several and potential problems may arise:
 
1. A damaged fruit or vegetable may burst in fungi damaging the others.
 
2. It requires more attention to localize damaged cases for elimination or disposal, which create losses in produce and extra cost in handling the damaged ones.
 
3. The ones that have escaped your naked eyes may be identified by the retailer or even worst, by the consumer, having to suffer more losses in produce rejections, product handling but even worst a damage to the brand since the consumer will associate in a negative way the damaged product to the brand.
 
4. An even more dangerous and potential problem may arise from the real possibility of pathogen development in the produce that reaches a level that the normal care and vegetable wash practices at home don´t control it, causing food poisoning and stomach illness than in case of humans with already challenged immune system may cause sever illness or even death. Under this circumstances the damages are catastrophic and any extra precaution should add more value to the brand. The consumers, retailers and regulators should really appreciate these efforts.
